It is clear that Steam for Linux is here to stay, and proof of that is that the Steam library of the open source platform has just passed 1,300 titles.

You might think that 1,300 is not a big number, but this has been achieved in just a little over two years. Before Steam for Linux was released, the gaming capabilities of Linux were laughable, but that's not the case anymore. The platform has moved on from virtually no major games to 1,300 titles on Steam, and we're not even counting the ones that are only available on GOG.com.

There is a total of 5877 games for the Windows platform, which means that one in four games on Steam has Linux support. Just a few months ago that fraction was one in five. Things are getting better with each passing day, and there is no reason to believe that things are about to change anytime soon.

Ny version av Laptop Mode Tools

Skriven Av: mdkdio Den: 2015-07-08 11:45:58     http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/

Laptop Mode Tools is a power-saving package for Linux systems, which lets users increase the life expectancy of a laptop's battery. A new version has been released and is now available for download.

Laptop Mode Tools doesn't get too many updates, but from the looks of it, there is no need. The application still works even after numerous kernel updates, and the developers only implement small stuff with each new update. It's quite possible that we'll see a resurgence in the new releases for this important tool.

"This release has many important bug fixes, and everyone is recommended to upgrade. Of the many, one important fix is to, more reliably check for Device Mapper based devices, which is common these days with Crypt and LVM," said the devs.

According to the changelog, a minimum window size has been implemented to accommodate low resolution screens, the variable name has been fixed in order to comply with "constants" assumptions, the power saving for Intel HD Audio now works better, Account Device Mapper devices are now available, swsusp freeze support has been added, and the Switch battery-level-polling default function is now True by default.

Users must not change the autonegotiation settings. Fiddling with auto-negotiation settings can cause more problems, and the standards expect them to be always on.

The Logjam SSL/TLS vulnerability is among the 13 security advisories in latest stable release of the open-source Firefox Web browser.

There are two new versions of Mozilla's Web browsers for users to try out today, with a stable Firefox 39 release and a beta of Firefox 40 that provides a preview of features still in active development.

With Firefox 39, Mozilla has integrated its Project Silkeffort, whose goal is to make the browser scrolling and animation experience smoother for Website rendering. So far, Project Silk has only been integrated into the Apple Mac OS X edition of Firefox 39.

Linux 4.2 RC1

Skriven Av: mdkdio Den: 2015-07-06 14:43:50

Linus Torvalds has loosed Linux 4.2-rc1 upon a waiting world, and rates it the biggest release candidate ever in terms of the volume of new code it contains.

The Linux Lord writes that “if you count the size in pure number of lines changed, this really seems to be the biggest rc we've ever had, with over a million lines added (and about a quarter million removed).”

Most of those new lines of code come from “the new amd gpu register description header”, code that Torvalds says comprises “41 per cent of the entire patch” and has created a “... somewhat odd situation where a single driver is about half of the whole rc1 in number of lines.”

Torvalds says 4.2rc1 knocks off the previous “champion”, 3.11rc1, which grew because it added the Lustre filesystem.

Also new to version 4.2 are the Renesas H8/300 architecture, “in a newly cleaned-up form” and “quite a bit of low-level x86 changes: both source code re-organization for x86 entry code and lots of FPU handling cleanups.”

Torvalds rates the x86 injections as “fairly unusual” because “low-level x86 code being fairly stable and seldom seeing those kinds of big changes.”

“Outside of the 'drivers and architectures', there's a fair amount of filesystem stuff, including some fundamental changes and cleanups to symlink handling by Al,” Torvalds concludes. “And all the usual updates to various filesystems, networking, crypto, tools, testing, you name it.”
