Linux 4.2 RC1
Skriven Av: mdkdio Den: 2015-07-06 14:43:50

Linus Torvalds has loosed Linux 4.2-rc1 upon a waiting world, and rates it the biggest release candidate ever in terms of the volume of new code it contains.

The Linux Lord writes that “if you count the size in pure number of lines changed, this really seems to be the biggest rc we've ever had, with over a million lines added (and about a quarter million removed).”

Most of those new lines of code come from “the new amd gpu register description header”, code that Torvalds says comprises “41 per cent of the entire patch” and has created a “... somewhat odd situation where a single driver is about half of the whole rc1 in number of lines.”

Torvalds says 4.2rc1 knocks off the previous “champion”, 3.11rc1, which grew because it added the Lustre filesystem.

Also new to version 4.2 are the Renesas H8/300 architecture, “in a newly cleaned-up form” and “quite a bit of low-level x86 changes: both source code re-organization for x86 entry code and lots of FPU handling cleanups.”

Torvalds rates the x86 injections as “fairly unusual” because “low-level x86 code being fairly stable and seldom seeing those kinds of big changes.”

“Outside of the 'drivers and architectures', there's a fair amount of filesystem stuff, including some fundamental changes and cleanups to symlink handling by Al,” Torvalds concludes. “And all the usual updates to various filesystems, networking, crypto, tools, testing, you name it.”

LibreOffice 4.4.4 med 70+ buggfixar...
Skriven Av: mdkdio Den: 2015-07-02 18:07:23

The Document Foundation announced that LibreOffice 4.4.4 is now available for download and packs over 70 bugfixes.
It's not the last one in the series, so expect to see more of these in the coming months.

The 4.x branch of LibreOffice is still the most advanced version that you can use right now, at least until the launch of the 5.x version.
It's also quite stable, and after four updates you know you're getting something good.
It's an office suite that's integrated by default in most Linux operating systems, so this update will probably hit a lot of users very soon.

Before you get too excited with a new LibreOffice release, you need to keep in mind that this is only for maintenance purposes,
and it's all about bug fixing. You won't find any new features in 4.4.4, but as usual we recommend that you update
the office suite as soon as it becomes available in the official repositories.

What's new in LibreOffice 4.4.4

"The Document Foundation (TDF) announces LibreOffice 4.4.4, the fourth minor release of the LibreOffice 4.4 family,
with over 70 fixes over LibreOffice 4.4.3. The Document Foundation suggests deploying LibreOffice in enterprises and large organizations
with the backing of professional support by certified people. Also, the LibreOffice community is actively working at next major release,
LibreOffice 5.0, expected in early August 2015. After two successful bug hunting sessions,
developers are putting the finishing touches to the software," is noted in the announcement.

As usual, the new LibreOffice will land in repositories across the world, but not at the same time.

Linux 4.1 final release
Skriven Av: mdkdio Den: 2015-06-22 19:38:48

"So after a *very* quiet week after the 4.1-rc8 release, the final 4.1
release is now out.

I'm not sure if it was quiet because there really were no problems
(knock wood), or if people decided to be considerate of my vacation,
but whatever the reason, I appreciate it.

It's not like the 4.1
release cycle was particularly painful, and let's hope that the extra
week of letting it sit makes for a great release. Which wouldn't be a
bad thing, considering that 4.1 will also be a LTS release.

Anyway, since rc8 we've had truly small changes, mainly some final
driver fixups (HDA sound, drm, scsi target, crypto) and a couple of
small misc fixes. The appended shortlog is probably one of the
shortest ones ever. I'm not complaining.

And this obviously means that the merge window for 4.2 is open.
